Lights of Wrigley Field

by Mark Buerschaper

about

My father, like many, was a HUGE Cubs fan. Through his war years, through alcoholism, through my childhood and adult years and until his death. This song is dedicated to his spirit and his spirit.

lyrics

The names may change but the story remains the same
Through the pinstripes and long hot summer days
With an addiction to the nation's game
My father followed every play by play.

As the vines turned from brown to green
He watched his team on the field of dreams
A loyalty that would never yield
Another year of devotion to Wrigley field

A bottle of whiskey became his best friend
Never realizing he losing and not winning
I was in the bars wishing the game would end
While his drinking went into extra innings

The sober years then had finally arrived
We attended cubbie games he went to aa
The tables turned with alcohol denied
I threw away bitterness while the odds had been defied

Strike one was no pneumonia detection
Strike two a heart attack was the finale
Strike three was a staff infection
It was my father's ninth inning and there would be no rally

As the vines turned from brown to green
He watches his team on the field of dreams
A season pass eternally revealed
Under the lights and sun of Wrigley field

The album features the full gamut of his style which runs from introspective folk to novelty and alternative indie genres. Much of the commentary is about perceived social norms. ... more
